Fourth of July Eats!

Does anyone else feel completely thrown off with a holiday in the middle of the week. Tuesday felt like Friday, Wednesday felt like Saturday, and I have no idea what today feels like. Nonetheless, I thoroughly enjoyed having a day off in the middle of the week to spend with Blake! I intentionally took off work and just spent the day prepping for our big grill-out in the evening. I’m sharing my eats from the day, as well as some intuitive eating notes at the end.

Before I dive in, I want to say that these posts are not for comparison. Rather they are here to provide inspiration for your eats and give you freedom to listen to your body and enjoy good food, as I am learning to do.

Morning started bright and early with my morning routine – read my Bible, read personal development, journal, and physical therapy. Afterwards, Blake made coffee and I made us smoothies. I have no idea where my smoothie kick started, but I can’t get enough of them! In mine, I put 2% organic milk; organic frozen spinach, berries, cauliflower (for extra thickness), and 1/2 banana; scoop of sunflower seed butter (TJ’s brand is the best); 1 tsp maca powder; and 2 scoops Orgain Chocolate Protein & Greens. I like my smoothies super thick, and this one turned out perfect! I had the same smoothie the day before and was hungry 2 hours later, but yesterday this kept me full for hours.

We went to the grocery store as soon as possible in the morning to miss the rush and then spent the morning cleaning and prepping. I wasn’t super hungry today, but around 1pm I knew I should have something to eat, so I made a salad with kale (massaged with olive oil, salt, pepper, and vinegar), broccoli slaw, dried cranberries, pistachios, feta, and rotisserie chicken. Normally I would add a carb to this meal, but we didn’t have anything that sounded appetizing and I was satisfied after the salad.

I spent part of the afternoon relaxing and taking advantage of some Fourth of July sales online (all the things I don’t really do on a regular basis). Mid-afternoon, Blake and went out for coffee to our favorite coffee spot in Philly, which happens to only be a block away – Function Coffee. This place is a coffee nerd’s dream! I went for a classic iced americano, while Blake went for one of their coffee “cocktails.”

When I got home, I finished up some prepping and snacked on some carrots, a chunk of cheese, and some mini peanut butter crackers (love these things)! I didn’t feel super hungry and wasn’t sure what would satisfy me, hence the randomness of the snacks.

Our friends arrived around 5pm. While we visited, I had a mini mojito and snacked on veggies and hummus. We ended up having close to 20 people over, which was a little out of my comfort zone, but honestly was so fun! I was so caught up in making sure everyone had what they needed and making guests feel at home that I didn’t even think about food that much. Everyone brought lots of sides which looked so yummy. On my plate, I had a burger, caesar salad, slaw, tortellini salad, and a soba noodle salad. I also had some watermelon kombucha on the side. I ate everything on my plate and went back for some more caesar and soba noodle salads, but left the slaw because I wasn’t feeling it.

I visited with people for a while and then we all went up to the roof for dessert. There were so many good desserts, but I had my eye on the homemade peach pie. I felt a little more than satisfied after dinner, so I went for a smaller piece of pie and a bit of ice cream. While there was a lot of drinks around, I had decided not to have any or much alcohol because my body wasn’t feeling it, but by the end of the night as it was getting dark, a beer sounded nice. I probably had 1/4 of a bottle and then handed it to Blake. Just that little bit hit the spot.

I shared on Instagram yesterday how food on holidays used to stress me out. I’d spend the whole day trying to control my food when food was constantly around (including many “restricted” foods). I’d miss out on being with people and making memories. I know I’m not alone in this, and I see countless articles and social media messages about how to avoid the “bad foods” on these days. Feeling out of control around food and/or restricted around food, does not have to be the case. Many times, we feel out of control around certain foods (or all foods) because we’ve given them a label and we never let ourselves have them. While if you let yourself have that food with the mindset that you can have another one if you want, or you can have one later or the next day, that food doesn’t have as much power over you.

In my own journey with intuitive eating, I’ve taken this mindset to holidays and it’s made a world of difference. I focus on nourishing my body throughout the day (not “saving up”) for the big meal, trying all the foods I want at the meal, and leaving ones that aren’t satisfying. I have found that when my body is satisfied and nourished, it is much easier to have balance with food.
